5 Ways to Prevent Falling in Older Adults

Falling is a common cause of injury and disability among older adults, but it can be prevented with some simple measures. Here are five ways to reduce your risk of falling and stay healthy and independent.

1

Exercise regularly. Physical activity can improve your strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination, decreasing the risk of falling. Focus on exercises that enhance lower body strength, such as walking, tai chi, yoga, and strength training. Before beginning any exercise program, especially if you have an existing health condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional.

2

Regular Vision and Hearing Checks. Poor vision or hearing can increase the risk of falls. Check your eyesight and hearing regularly and update your eyeglasses or hearing aids as needed. Ensure that your eyeglasses are the correct prescription and that your hearing aids are in good working condition. You can also wear sunglasses to reduce glare and avoid walking in dimly lit or noisy areas.

3

Medication Management. Some medications or combinations of medications can affect balance and coordination. Consult your healthcare provider about potential side effects and interactions with your medications. Follow prescribed dosages and instructions carefully.

4

Make your home safer. Many falls happen at home, so it is essential to eliminate any hazards that may cause you to trip or slip. Make your living environment safer by removing tripping hazards, secure loose rugs or cords, add non-slip mats in the shower or tub, install handrails and grab bars in key areas like bathrooms and stairways. Use night lights or lamps in dark areas and keep the floor clear of clutter.

5

Use assistive devices if needed. If you have trouble walking or balancing, you may benefit from using a cane, walker, wheelchair, or other assistive device. These devices can help you move around more safely and confidently. However, ensure you use them correctly and get them fitted by a professional. You can also wear well-fitting, supportive shoes with non-slip soles to improve stability.

Preventing falls requires a proactive approach and a combination of lifestyle adjustments. Incorporate these strategies into your daily routine, you significantly reduce the risk of falls and enhance your overall safety and well-being.
